Online Courses

We hope you are all doing well at this strange time. At this time with no cricket being played, when perhaps you are looking for things to do, ECB ACO have now added an online version of the Stage 1 Umpires Course to the existing “Basics of Umpiring” and “Basics of Scoring” online courses. Here are the details of these courses and who they are principally aimed at. Click on the relevant course title to access the course. These courses are all free, so please free to let others who may be interested in officiating know about them.

Basics of Umpiring – This course is aimed at club umpires who just need to know the key laws and basic field craft and those players who umpire 5 or 10 overs at the weekend.

Umpire Stage One - This course is designed to give an overview of the basic Laws of the game and how to apply them and introduce the principles of field craft and match management. This course is an ideal introduction for new club umpires, a refresher for existing umpires and the first step for those who aspire to umpire at higher levels.

Basics of Scoring - This course is designed to provide all the skills needed to start scoring. The course covers the basics of scoring a game of cricket such as scoring symbols, umpire signals, dismissals and gives a helpful overview of the Laws of the game.

Annual Refresher Course Cancelled

Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, it is with regret that WACO must cancel all the refresher training for this year – so the dates of 28 March and the 4 April are cancelled.

In light of this, a couple of items that were intended to be covered were Laws 41 and Law 42. Within Law 42 there is a Discipline Code Flow Chart which should always be taken onto the field together with the Bowling Directives. With Law 41 guidance, you should know how these work and you should be very familiar with how these laws should be applied, particularly within the League Cricket environment.

Last season, our Chairman David Gower had to sit on a number of discipline panels, and so he was privy to a number of discipline reports. Some of the reports were very good and clear liaison had taken place between colleagues who were working together. Other reports were not so, NO discipline report should be submitted to any league discipline body without agreement over the issues and a firm agreement from each colleague, under no circumstances should separate reports be submitted. It may be that one of you takes the initiate but the other must agree before it is submitted (email) but try and write it before you leave the venue or go somewhere else to chat it through. There are a number of us on the committee who can help. It is not a weakness to ask for help - it is good practice and sensible.
